Gentlemen:
Well guys another wrestling
season is in the books having been capped off with the NCAA finals
on ESPN. It's great to see our sport get the attention it so
richly deserves on national television. Me, I want more; like
seeing the D-1 semi final rounds and some of the qualifying
conference tournaments leading up to the D-1s being broadcast. A
little foreplay is necessary before the final climax, wouldn't you
agree? It would be great to "listen in" on the discussions
taking place between coaches on how they arrive at the at-large
qualifiers. As they say, "hope springs eternal".
If you were able to
catch the broadcast I think you'd agree there were some great
matches contested. Each match was well officiated, although some
of the observations coming from Jeff Blatnik concerning certain
situations were certainly skewed toward a wrestler's perspective.
All-in-all, some great officiating took place; from mechanics, to
positioning, to working with the assistant referee. For those that
did watch we no doubt raised an eyebrow on why a certain call was
or wasn't made. That's par for the course. We wouldn't be
wrestling referees if we didn't think that way. Still, those ten
officials working under that kind of pressure, in front of a sold
out arena and national television audience, did a yeoman's job.
That is indeed reaching the pinnacle of officiating and each of
our brother officials are to be congratulated.
I hope your season
was a successful one and that you accomplished all that you set
out to achieve. Our Association has work to do to prepare for next
season. We welcome your thoughts, even your assistance, in helping
continue to build an organization that is able to reach out and
meet the needs of our member officials and schools this
Association serves. The officers of the CWOA are listed on the
left side of the screen. Contact them with your ideas and
recommendations, even your criticisms, in the coming months. You
elected them, why not make them earn their titles? If you wait
until next October to speak up the opportunity to make a
difference will be long past.
“Excellence can be obtained if you:
...care more than others think is wise;
...risk more than others think is safe;
...dream more than others think is practical;
...expect more than others think is possible.”
Be safe and see
you on a mat next year.
